Was thinking about you after the brouhaha over on Kurungabaa.* Glad you had your say on the issue, no matter where it was written.

*Is 'brouhaha' the closest rhyme to Kurungabaa that we have? I hope that I made it clear that I reckon Kurungabaa always, always acts in ways that are inclusive of differnet kinds of surfing voices and ideas, not just the strongest and loudest. That is absolutely why I love being a part of it, and where its significance lies. This is in NO WAY a critique of Kurungabaa as much as making an example of how things are done well there.

In terms of this piece, I did spend some time thinking about where it would sit best and why that was. My feeling is that the ratbags that I am critiquing here don't read my little site, so posting it here gives it some space to sit and breathe on its own terms. Those crew do read and get invovled with the posts on Kurungabaa, and I suppose I was fearful of the ways they could jump all over me about this. So I chose, perhaps with some level of cowardice, to avoid their derision.

Which, as you point out, is another example of how those ways of participating suck. Don't think I am proud of my choice or the reasons behind it. The things is that I am not a weak or scared kind of chick, and I am more than happy to take responisbility for my ideas and what I say, but I do get tired - which I'm sure you understand. Maybe I should re-post it there? Maybe.

In the end, it is not your job to protect me - I don't want you to. But nor should I fear that I need to keep a concerned eye on the ways things play out. The final responsibility and indictment lies with each of us to act and speak in ways that don't have such a negative, marginalising impact, as I try to point to here.Rebecca Olivehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09428676558153909572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29437172.post-27786373590556194752010-09-11T17:56:46.417+10:002010-09-11T17:56:46.417+10:00This is a wonderful piece of writing, Bec. I have ...This is a wonderful piece of writing, Bec. I have been thinking about the same things, but I hadn't been able to pen anything about it that was satisfactory. You sum it all up, beautifully. I am worried that you do not feel safe enough to post such a wonderful piece at Kurungabaa or comment on the debate. It's a classic case of the silencing effect of the discourse favoured by a particular clique, which ignores its censoring effect in its own right. Of course, your own blog needs material too and you feel best here. That makes sense. Over at Kurungabaa I posted a response to the debate that was being had. It seems to have stopped the debate. Many of the commentators have now left us to our own devices. I like Kurungabaa not perpetuating prejudices and xenophobia etc. We aimed to make it different from the old guff. Anyway, I hope you feel OK posting and commenting there again, soon. I keep an eye on the comments to ensure an ethical ethos remains the journal's bedrock. And I encourage you to delete or moderate anything as you see fit. I would never allow comments to stay that are racist, homophobic, etc. If you ever see any do let me know or take care of it yourself. I let the current debate and comments section play out a bit more than usual so that crew could get it off their chest and we could move on, and go back to where we were. We have our own lineup, they now have theirs.

Clif.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
